TMNT Signing with Rich Douek

Local comic writer (seriously, the guy lives 3 blocks away) Rich Douek has written an issue of TMNT Universe and it comes out end of June/July and to celebrate, Rich is coming by the shop to sign copies and talk about Ninja Turtles with the fans!

Rich Douek is a writer, copywriter, and graphic designer working in New York City. He has written comics for Comixtribe, Red Stylo Press and IDW Publishing, and helmed award-winning advertising campaigns for clients such as Snickers, FedEx, and Foot Locker.

He is the creator of Gutter Magic, an urban fantasy series that he is continually working to expand upon, as well as several other creator-owned properties in various stages of development.

Rich spends most of his time writing, and the rest of it thinking about writing, much to the chagrin of his wife and children, who nevertheless tolerate and support his mad dreams of making a living by putting words on paper.

Meet Rich, get a copy of TMNT Universe #11 and hang out with a creative super man and rising Montclair legend!

My Little Pony Party with Diana Leto

It's a pony party - a MY LITTLE PONY PARTY with the amazing Diana Leto!

You may recognize Diana Leto's name from her cover artwork for IDW’s MY LITTLE PONY and DARK HORSE’s Jungle Tales of Tarzan. A professional illustrator for over a decade, she has made a name for herself creating art for world class clients like Nickelodeon, Jim Henson Legacy, Sesame Street, Dark Horse comics, IDW Comics, and Warner Bros.

Diana earned her “Tarzan Yell” as the illustrator for the comic adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs "The Cave Girl" and is the colorist for the latest incarnation of "Carson of Venus".

Her artwork is featured in Dark Horse’s graphic novel "The Halloween Legion", the critically acclaimed and Stan Lee Excelsior nominated all-ages adventure, of which she is co-creator. She is an active participant and presenter at Kids Comic Con and Adobe MAX, promoting literacy, education, and by example, gender equality in the professional arts.

Diana recently had some work published in My Little Pony Friends Forever Omnibus Volume 2 so to celebrate Diana will be hanging out with us from 1pm-6pm and sketching for customers!  Come by, say hi and get an awesome sketch!

Make Music Day Montclair 2017

It's that beautiful day again - Make Music Day Montclair 2017!  That wonderful day where businesses all over Montclair celebrate music and those who make it and East Side Mags is ALWAYS on board for that!

In TRUE ESM-style, we are bringing you the best live music we can get our hands on and that includes:

Brielle Liebman @ 5pm - Brielle Liebman is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from New Jersey. She began singing and songwriting during her elementary school years, and started playing guitar during middle school. She grew up listening to the Beatles, Springsteen, and 90's alternative rock. As the years went on, her interests in music expanded to folk greats like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, and punk music like The Clash. Currently, she is inspired by many genres and artists. "I draw my inspiration from many different types of music," she says, "my playlists might seem random to anyone but myself; I could be listening to Fiona Apple one minute, and jump to Pakistani Quawwali artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the next." She is concerned with the artistry of music and lyrics, as well as the power music can have to change the world. Aspiring to be like Joan Baez, or Pete Seeger, she often writes about social justice issues, and seeks to teach through her songwriting.

Rockstar Racecar @ 6pm - Tween punk trio *Rockstar Racecar* plays solid originals and classic punk covers at festivals, clubs and special events.  Led by the multi-talented *Troy Donohue* (guitars, keys, vocals), the band is supported by bassist *Heaney*(no first names, please) and *The Wolverine* on drums (named for the vicious and unforgiving badger, not the famed mutant superhero). Their tracks can be heard on Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud and Bandcamp.  The boys will be spending their upcoming spring break at the renowned *Temple of Tuneage* recording their first professional EP.

Palmarosa @ 7:15pm - Palmarosa is six-piece band from NJ covering all your favorite alternative, punk, new wave, and modern rock artists. You'll hear the hits, deep-cuts, and b-sides from bands like The Ramones, Bowie, B-52s, The Killers, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins and more. Check out Palmarosa to see a fun, passionate, high-energy rock n' roll show!

Palmarosa consists of these six cool people:
Alaina - Vocals
Laura - Keys, Vocals
Madeleine - Rhythm Guitar
Lisa - Bass
Ben - Lead Guitar
Drew - Drums

So join us for an awesome day of rock n roll and good time vibes!  Enjoy the beautiful weather and rock with us!

Three Year GWAR-niversay

East Side Mags was born on 6/14/2014.  According to the Chinese Astrology, one of our lucky numbers is 3 - which is great cuz this is our THREE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

It also says we were "born" in the year of the Horse so, naturally, we're going to have enough fun to choke one! :)

Since we've hit this legendary 3-year mark, we've decided it's time to up the ante and get in the store exclusive variant game!  Lots of publishers offer this for a variety of comics but - like a first tattoo - we wanted it to be meaningful and special to us - before we just go hog-wild and get whatever looks cool.

Our decision happened to be an easy one - GWAR Orgasmageddon #1!

Why such an easy choice?

  1. Gwar is a kick-ass rock band and everyone knows East Side Mags is all about rock n roll!
  2. It's written by one of our favorite writers - Matt Miner - who wrote Liberator and Toe Tag Riot -  2 of our favorite Black Mask comics EVER!
  3. Our store exclusive variant is drawn by Sean Von Gorman - the hardest working man in comics and an the artist behind Toe Tag Riot (see the connection?)
  4. The comic is lettered by our great friend Taylor Esposito - who has himself lettered something like 400+ comics across a plethora of publishers!
  5. Lastly - did we mention we LOVE rock n roll?

To celebrate our new-found exclusive variant cover, Taylor Esposito, Matt Miner and Sean Von Gorman will be here in person from 1pm-6pm, signing copies of the East Side Mags exclusive, sketching and talking about rock n roll til you're blue in the face!  And we wouldn't have it any other way!

We'll also have PLENTY OF OTHER 3RD BIRTHDAY SURPRISES along the way so stay tuned...

Keeping to our rock n roll theme, we're excited to culminate the day with a kick-ass punk show featuring 2 bands that are near and dear to us:

Thee Volatiles @ 8PM- After a nearly 16 year hiatus, the trailblazing indie rock quartet, Thee Volatiles, which came of age in the late 1980s underground East Village DIY club scene, has been rocking again with disarming energy and intensity.  There was never much tawdry glamor with Thee Volatiles; just raw nerves, and thankfully, we can all start scratching that itch once again.

Hollywood Ave Reunion @ 8:45PM - For those who don't know, Jeff was in a band called She Could Be King.  His band played a TON of shows with a kick ass rock band called Hollywood Ave from Essex County!  Hollywood Ave had an amazing run, playing shows all over the East Coast and a HUGE fan base with their catchy riffs, sing-a-long lyrics and witty banter on stage.  They were one of the last remnants of the massive punk scene North Jersey became known about for decades!  NOW - they're BACK and better than ever after a brief hiatus as Policemen in Pickups.  East Side Mags is PROUD to have HWA back in action and even more proud to bring them to our store for a reunion show unlike any other!

In recent years, Jeremy has taught illustration to the gifted and talented youth in elementary after school programs and summer camps. He has also worked closely with the very young autistic population as well as in class support para professional.

Gee Terado - NJ based artist with a BA in Media Arts and Animation. Known for zombifying clients and fan favorite characters. Enjoys crossing over other comic book, cartoon, and other fictional characters in a scenario. Also, illustrates his client's into their favorite characters. Sometimes works in digital media but mostly in traditional mediums.

Marleni Gomez - Marleni Gomez is Freelance illustrator / Designer from Paterson NJ who sells her work at shows both near and in galaxies far away. she is also the creator of Kinda!Con, a new con for young artists and cosplayers. Corey Chrapuch - Corey Chrapuch is an Ilustrator/Designer based out of NJ, an Animation/Illustration student working on her thesis, and a former Titmouse, Inc. Intern. She lives off of comic books, animation, pop culture, and cult classics - and aspires to own many dogs and work in the Animation Industry.

Kim "Shady" Griffin - Kim Griffin has been a freelance artist under the name Kim Shady since 2010 when she left the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Over the past five years she's done everything from airbrushed illustrations and acrylic paintings to wood burning and photography for a varying array of clients. Her art has been featured in Garden State Skate magazine and was also showcased on the cover of Belmar NJ Magazine. She has created pieces for businesses all over New Jersey.

Players build 30-card minimum deck from three booster packs, and then each week (and after 3 losses) have the option to add another booster pack to their card pool.

Magic League: Amonkhet runs on the following dates:

Week 1: Sunday, May 7, 2017 (three initial boosters)

Week 2: Sunday, May 14, 2017 (additional booster)

Week 3: Sunday, May 21, 2017 (additional booster)

Week 4: Sunday, May 28, 2017 (additional booster)

Basically, this event works like a draft but instead of passing the packs, you have to build your deck from the 3 packs provided during Week 1 (Sunday, May 7th).

Then, each following week, you bring your deck back and we give you an additional booster pack to pump up your existing deck!

Entry fee is $14 for Week 1 and $5 each for Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4!

Womens Empowerment Signing

UPDATE (3/26/17):  Rev up those cutie-marks, Diana Leto is rounding out our Womens Empowerment Signing event!

East Side Mags - along with Montclair Center - are celebrating women and everything they do that makes this world amazing!  Montclair Center has a whole week of fantastic and empowering events taking place.  You can check out all the great events here.

East Side Mags is no different.  In fact, we aim to show you how impactful women are in the comics community!  And to prove that, we are bringing in some of the most amazing women we could find (and know personally):

Meet Amy Chu.  Amy is an amazing writer and has skyrocketed to new heights in the comics industry!  She's most recently known for her work on Poison Ivy: The Cycle of Life & Death (the first ever solo Poison Ivy comic series) and her work on KISS comics out through Dynamite Entertainment.  She's also worked on titles for publishers like DC Comics, Marvel, IDW, Valiant and Dynamite.  Not only that, but she's the co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics!

Meet Michelle Delecki.  Michelle paints and draws beautifully!  Her work is gorgeous and her attention to detail is unparalleled.  She's a painter, illustrator and a guitarist.  She loves 80s metal, violent 80s and 90s action movies with car chases and explosions and loves to laugh!  She most recently worked on an indie title called Axcend which was about video games intersecting and affecting the real world!  An amazing tale and you can check out her beautiful work here!

Meet Brigid Allanson.  Brigid is a graduate of the Kubert School in Dover, NJ and a seriously talented artist!  She works as a freelance artist and graphic designer AND teaches East Side Mags' own Learn to Draw Comics Class on Saturday mornings! Brigid's work includes YIIK - an indie video game - as well as a Kickstarter for an upcoming video game slated to be available on PC, PS4, PSVita and Unity called Hush-Hush 229.  She's brought her talent to conventions all over including but not limited to Garden State Comic Fest, NYC Special Edition and more!  You can check out her work here.

The event will take place from 1pm-4pm on Sunday, April 9th.  The perfect end to a week of empowering women and a bright future for women everywhere!

Love is Love Signing / Fundraiser

East Side Mags is and has always been community focused.  When we heard that an anthology was coming out to support the victims and survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016 - we were beside ourselves with anticipation.  Not only because the comic community had gotten together to put together an amazing collection of original stories to support those affected but also that we already knew so many people involved in the book!  We also believe that, well, love is love and it doesn't matter who it is, what gender/religion/ethnicity/background you carry with you, everyone is entitled to the amazing feeling of being loved and loving someone!

So, in an East Side Mags first-ever event, we are hosting more talent on one day than ever before to drive the point home that violence and hatred can't silence the power of love!

We are extremely happy to host:

We'll have copies of the Love is Love anthology for sale as well as copies of some other books that these fine comic professionals have worked on that you can get signed and/or sketched on!

To culminate the day, we at East Side Mags are committed to helping those in need and will be donating 5% of our total days' sales to Equality Florida (www.eqfl.org).

We look forward to seeing everyone and even more so to spreading the love!
