Make Music Day Montclair 2017

It's that beautiful day again - Make Music Day Montclair 2017!  That wonderful day where businesses all over Montclair celebrate music and those who make it and East Side Mags is ALWAYS on board for that!

In TRUE ESM-style, we are bringing you the best live music we can get our hands on and that includes:

Brielle Liebman @ 5pm - Brielle Liebman is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from New Jersey. She began singing and songwriting during her elementary school years, and started playing guitar during middle school. She grew up listening to the Beatles, Springsteen, and 90's alternative rock. As the years went on, her interests in music expanded to folk greats like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, and punk music like The Clash. Currently, she is inspired by many genres and artists. "I draw my inspiration from many different types of music," she says, "my playlists might seem random to anyone but myself; I could be listening to Fiona Apple one minute, and jump to Pakistani Quawwali artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the next." She is concerned with the artistry of music and lyrics, as well as the power music can have to change the world. Aspiring to be like Joan Baez, or Pete Seeger, she often writes about social justice issues, and seeks to teach through her songwriting.

Rockstar Racecar @ 6pm - Tween punk trio *Rockstar Racecar* plays solid originals and classic punk covers at festivals, clubs and special events.  Led by the multi-talented *Troy Donohue* (guitars, keys, vocals), the band is supported by bassist *Heaney*(no first names, please) and *The Wolverine* on drums (named for the vicious and unforgiving badger, not the famed mutant superhero). Their tracks can be heard on Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud and Bandcamp.  The boys will be spending their upcoming spring break at the renowned *Temple of Tuneage* recording their first professional EP.

Palmarosa @ 7:15pm - Palmarosa is six-piece band from NJ covering all your favorite alternative, punk, new wave, and modern rock artists. You'll hear the hits, deep-cuts, and b-sides from bands like The Ramones, Bowie, B-52s, The Killers, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins and more. Check out Palmarosa to see a fun, passionate, high-energy rock n' roll show!

Palmarosa consists of these six cool people:
Alaina - Vocals
Laura - Keys, Vocals
Madeleine - Rhythm Guitar
Lisa - Bass
Ben - Lead Guitar
Drew - Drums

So join us for an awesome day of rock n roll and good time vibes!  Enjoy the beautiful weather and rock with us!

East Side Mags is no different.  In fact, we aim to show you how impactful women are in the comics community!  And to prove that, we are bringing in some of the most amazing women we could find (and know personally):

Meet Amy Chu.  Amy is an amazing writer and has skyrocketed to new heights in the comics industry!  She's most recently known for her work on Poison Ivy: The Cycle of Life & Death (the first ever solo Poison Ivy comic series) and her work on KISS comics out through Dynamite Entertainment.  She's also worked on titles for publishers like DC Comics, Marvel, IDW, Valiant and Dynamite.  Not only that, but she's the co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics!

Meet Michelle Delecki.  Michelle paints and draws beautifully!  Her work is gorgeous and her attention to detail is unparalleled.  She's a painter, illustrator and a guitarist.  She loves 80s metal, violent 80s and 90s action movies with car chases and explosions and loves to laugh!  She most recently worked on an indie title called Axcend which was about video games intersecting and affecting the real world!  An amazing tale and you can check out her beautiful work here!

Meet Brigid Allanson.  Brigid is a graduate of the Kubert School in Dover, NJ and a seriously talented artist!  She works as a freelance artist and graphic designer AND teaches East Side Mags' own Learn to Draw Comics Class on Saturday mornings! Brigid's work includes YIIK - an indie video game - as well as a Kickstarter for an upcoming video game slated to be available on PC, PS4, PSVita and Unity called Hush-Hush 229.  She's brought her talent to conventions all over including but not limited to Garden State Comic Fest, NYC Special Edition and more!  You can check out her work here.

The event will take place from 1pm-4pm on Sunday, April 9th.  The perfect end to a week of empowering women and a bright future for women everywhere!

Love is Love Signing / Fundraiser

East Side Mags is and has always been community focused.  When we heard that an anthology was coming out to support the victims and survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016 - we were beside ourselves with anticipation.  Not only because the comic community had gotten together to put together an amazing collection of original stories to support those affected but also that we already knew so many people involved in the book!  We also believe that, well, love is love and it doesn't matter who it is, what gender/religion/ethnicity/background you carry with you, everyone is entitled to the amazing feeling of being loved and loving someone!

So, in an East Side Mags first-ever event, we are hosting more talent on one day than ever before to drive the point home that violence and hatred can't silence the power of love!

We are extremely happy to host:

We'll have copies of the Love is Love anthology for sale as well as copies of some other books that these fine comic professionals have worked on that you can get signed and/or sketched on!

To culminate the day, we at East Side Mags are committed to helping those in need and will be donating 5% of our total days' sales to Equality Florida (www.eqfl.org).

We look forward to seeing everyone and even more so to spreading the love!

A Double Take Double Signing

It's a Double Take Double Signing!

Meet Stan Chou!

Stan Chou (pronounced “cho”) has been illustrating all of his life and transitioned to a full-time illustrator after moving to NYC in 2012. He excels at storytelling, and naturally gravitated toward creating storyboards, animatics and comic books. He has a successful track record with clients curated through both the internet and networking in New York City, such as Take-Two Interactive (Double Take Comics), Leath Group, InkWhiskey, HyperX, FUBAR Press, and more.

Prior to 2012, Stan fulfilled his dream of living and working in Japan, both as an English teacher and as a Japanese translator. He received his education in the U.S. and Taiwan, and is happily married with two children.

In his spare time, Stan plays Pokemon Go, watches entrepreneur vloggers on YouTube, listens to mindblowing podcasts across the web, is obsessed with Fangraphs.com and predictive MLB statistics like WAR and FIP, is into retro pop culture like Transformers and Star Wars, is a huge Google geek (sorry Apple), and loves crafting with his two children.

Meet Matt Summo!  He's been the writer for Double Take Comics' series Dedication and Z-Mart.  Outside of that, Matt is a complete MYSTERY but we'll have him in the shop for 4 total hours so come by and find out what he's all about!  (It's gotta be good if he writes Zombie books!)

The signing is from 1pm-5pm.  Stan will be sketching on blank covers and both guys will be signing copies of their books that we'll have for sale!  In addition, they'll have prints and original works of art that you purchase directly from them and support local artists and writers!

Zombie up! Let's go!

Signing - Jamal Igle and Magdalene Visaggio

It's 2017 and East Side Mags is taking things to next level with amazing artist Jamal Igle (Black, Molly Danger) and super-mega-talented writer Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim, Quantum Teens Are Go)!  It's a signing people!  Let's get hyped!

Both are currently working on Black Mask Studios titles which are making waves and bringing in new comic fans every day with fresh ideas and a publisher who's not afraid to take risks and try new stuff!

Jamal Igle is drawing the comic BLACK - In a world that already hates and fears them – what if only Black people had superpowers?  After miraculously surviving being gunned down by police, a young man learns that he is part of the biggest lie in history. Now he must decide whether it’s safer to keep it a secret or if the truth will set him free.  X-Men meets The Wire, BLACK’s Kickstarter blazed through Black History Month 2016 earning $91,973, more than three time its funding goal.

About Jamal: A recipient of the 2011 Inkpot Award for outstanding achievement in Comic Art, Jamal Igle is the writer/artist/Creator of Molly Danger for Action Lab Entertainment and the penciller of The Terminator: Enemy of My Enemy for Dark Horse Comics. Jamal’s detailed pencils have graced books as varied as The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglas, the all ages action miniseries “Race Against Time” as well as mainstream hits such as G.I.Joe, Iron Man, Spider- Man and Green Lantern. Jamal has served as the series artist for Firestorm the Nuclear Man, Nightwing and Tangent: Superman’s Reign, Superman, Supergirl and Zatanna for DC Comics, Noble Causes for Image Comics and a four issue run on New Warriors for Marvel Comics. In 2003 Jamal co- created the comic book series ” VENTURE” with Dynamo 5 creator/writer Jay Faerber. He’s done just about everything from acting on the small screen to voiceovers for commercials, packaging books for Scholastic, storyboards artist on Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles and Max Steel: MX1 for Sony Animation. Jamal is also a popular guest lecturer on the subjects of comics and animation.

Magdalene Visaggio is writing the comic KIM & KIM - Kim & Kim are twentysomething besties out to make a name for themselves in the wild world of interdimensional cowboy law enforcement. In a massive “screw you” to their parents and the authorities, they decide to hijack some high stakes bounty — and end up in way over their heads. Kim & Kim is a day-glo action adventure that’s bursting with energy and enthusiasm. It puts queer women and trans women front and center, with a story that embraces the absurd alongside realistic pathos.  Blending the punk exuberance of TANK GIRL with the buddy adventure wackiness of SUPERBAD (if Michael Cera was a trans woman and Jonah Hill a queergirl partner in crime), Kim & Kim focuses on the power and meaning of female friendships as engines of validation. A bright, happy, punk rock sci fi adventure that is queer as shit.

About Magdalene:  Magdalene Visaggio is the writer of Kim & Kim for Black Mask Studios. Her forthcoming work includes Quantum Teens Are Go and Kim & Kim: Return of the Hipster Freaks, both for Black Mask, she has also contributed work for DC Comics. Raised in Richmond, Virginia, she currently resides in Uptown Manhattan with her wife.

Come check out Jamal and Magdalene on January 14th from 1pm-6pm.  Both will be signing copies of their books and Jamal will be sketching for customers!  We even have a handful of BLACK #1 NYCC EXCLUSIVE sketch covers available!!!

Don't miss what could be the most important and definitely the most FUN signing of 2017!

Meet HSL Photography

Ever wonder where the amazing (and professional) photos on our website, Facebook page and other social media accounts come from?  Jeff isn't nearly that talented and Chris is an artist but no photographer!

It's Howie of HSL Photography that takes all the amazing photos you see!

Come by East Side Mags on Sunday, December 18th and meet Howie in person, check out some of his awesome photography skills and find out more about the variety of events and sessions HSL can help out with!  He does cosplay shoots, fashion blogs, weddings or any other event you can think of that you want captured in pristine, clear photographs to commemorate forever!

He'll have prints of some of his previous photo shoots for sale and I'm sure he'll even sign the prints if you ask real nice! :)  He's a great guy - super professional - and East Side Mags stands by his work all day, every day!

About HSL Photography:  For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had some sort of camera in my hand.  Whether it was a disposable camera that I regularly bought at CVS during my teen years in the 90s or if it’s the DSLR I currently use, I’ve always loved the idea of giving memories a physical form.

Photography started to become more than a hobby for me one night in the late 2000’s when I took a long exposure of the ocean waters coming on to the shore by using the manual functions of my point n shoot camera.  From there I decided I want to take this hobby of mine more seriously and that led me to purchasing my first DSLR.

I’ve shot weddings, newborn portraits, corporate functions and everything in between and in the early 2010’s I found a way to combine my geeky side with my love for photography by shooting in the cosplay community.

Since finding my way there I’ve been published in several cosplay magazines, been featured on the cover of a book about cosplay in libraries written by an award winning author, become the official photographer for Garden State Comic Fest, the biggest convention in NJ, and have recently begun shooting for Hero Hair, a high end wig company whose work is featured in television, movies and on Broadway.

Human Rights Day

Come by East Side Mags on December 10th and celebrate your Human Rights!

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.

To celebrate, we're giving out FREE copies of CBLDF Defender which addresses censorship in comics and graphic novels and we'll have a small collection of local zines put together by people in the Montclair Community!

This is a FREE event - taking place all day.  We hope you can join us in celebrating our human rights!
