Factory of Lights Signing & Demo

East Side Mags LOVES D&D! But running 5 games a week isn’t enough for us! We need MORE!

Enter Scott Barton. Scott has developed his own “home brew” tabletop RPG adventure that’s catching on like wildfire and we’ve got him, live and in person, to show you his book, sign copies and even lead a demo so you can experience it in real time!

About the adventure: Take the Asphodel Express to a town lit by lanterns made of glowing metal, where a coroner pleads for your help in solving the murders of five young women.

Their bodies leave behind no clues or suspects. But why did they all work at the same factory? Why are there mutated apes roaming the snowy wilderness nearby? And how does it all connect to one inventor who - though beloved by everyone in Steinberg - hasn’t been seen for over fifty years?

About Scott: Scott Barton is a writer and professional Game Master from Maplewood, New Jersey. He loves horror in all its forms, and likes to use literary symbolism and history as inspirations for his table-top RPG campaigns and one-shots. When he’s not writing about crimes, magic, or magical crimes, he’s out exploring New York City, climbing a rock wall, or practicing handstands.

Join us on February 17 from 2pm-5pm and check out this soon-to-be legendary adventure!

Lisa Cheese Signing w/Kevin Alvir

Lisa Cheese & Ghost Guitar: Attack of the Snack seems like an average graphic novel for middle school aged kids but under the surface lies something extraordinary!

Taking relatable life situations: a job you can’t stand, parents that don’t understand, failed dreams and combining them with fantastic elements like a bionic arm, a unicorn and a demonic burger corporation - Lisa Cheese & Ghost Guitar is SO MUCH MORE than what you would expect and certainly it’s anything BUT average!

About the book: Lisa is a sweet unicorn girl with a cyborg arm… and anger issues… who’s late for her first day of work. And if this occult fast food chain’s minions don’t stop attacking, she’ll never achieve her dream of making it as a musician!

Lisa Cheese moved to Earth City hoping to make a name for herself as a folk singer… but her very first open mic was a disaster, leaving her with a bionic arm and an identity crisis. Now she’s starting a crummy office job, her parents back in their home dimension are laying on the guilt trip, her sister’s acting smug, and the cool girl at the record store leaves her tongue-tied. But none of that will matter if the city’s demonic new burger corporation achieves its evil ambitions: Lisa’s very life is at stake! Fortunately, she has allies…

About the creator: Kevin Alvir is a Brooklyn, New York based comic book maker, artist, educator, musician. His work has been featured in places such as Funny or Die, Current Affairs, HBO's High Maintenance, album covers, podcast tiles, and more. Kevin has done several webcomics: Lunch Adventures, Lisa Cheese : Cyborg Unicorn, Ghost Guitar, Scarberry, Meg Deerleg, Cock Knight, and more. Lisa Cheese & Ghost Guitar: Attack of the Snack is his first full length graphic novel. \

Kevin will be here signing copies of his book and will even have some copies of his minicomics to sale as well. He’ll be here from 2pm-5pm and we can’t be more excited! We hope you’ll join us for this amazing signing that also doubles as a spectacular holiday gift for that hard-to-shop-for friend or family member!

Mario Candelaria LIVE and IN-PERSON

A long time ago, in a comic shop just across the street, we hosted Mario Candelaria for a signing about a book he wrote called ASHES with our friend Karl Slominski. Mario was such a super cool guy and we had so much in common that we became fast friends!

Fast forward to 2020. The world is shut down and Mario reached out to us to see if we were ok and if we needed anything. Just that one touch - it meant the world to us in a time where we felt no one could hear us.

Now - the world has been re-opened and Mario is pumping out great idea after great idea! We’re super happy to have him here (just in time for the holidays) with 2 of his most recent works: Killchella and Tales from the Pandemic!

About Killchella: A group of friends attending a music festival in the desert face a bloody night of terror when an enigmatic pop star named Topanga Cornell recruits her most fanatical devotees to assist in a mass sacrifice ritual at her big return concert. The quest for good vibes quickly becomes a fight for survival as the crew tries to escape Topanga and her gang of blade-wielding obsessive fans she lovingly refers to as her "fawns" who will do anything #ForHerLove.

About Tales from the Pandemic: Band of Bards proudly presents Tales from the Pandemic, a retro pulp-styled collection of chaotic Twilight Zone-inspired short stories written and curated by Mario Candelaria, the twisted mind behind Killchella. Each story offers a skewed look at the lives of regular folks trying to make sense of peculiar encounters in a world that's caught in the throes of a pandemic.

Come meet Mario on November 25th from 2pm-5pm and get copies of these awesome all-in-one trade paperbacks, signed and ready for reading (or gifting)!

Paul Thayer of Project Naosis Signing

To say that we’ve known Paul a long time is probably an understatement. Paul came in here one day with a single issue of Project Naosis #0 and a TON of energy behind it and we clicked!

Paul has come through for events we’ve done both in store and in other areas of NJ. Anytime he’s been tabling at a convention that we were also at, he would come by and chat it up with us and bring that same level of energy as he did on Day 1!

That’s Paul! He LOVES his creation and he should. It’s really an awesome read!

Project Naosis is a superhero story unlike any other. In 2090, a speedster named Crimson Payne rises and eliminates all the heroes in existence. So, the government makes a super-enhanced team called Project Naosis to eliminate this rebellion. Where in this world there is NO MULTIVERSE, NO DO-OVERS, AND NO GODS. This team is made up of seven enhanced with the motive to do whatever it takes, including KILLING their enemies to save the world!

Here’s your chance to get one-on-one with Paul, hear about his inspirations and why he chose the direction for this book that he did and what keeps him going! He’s a great person and you won’t be able to NOT buy this book once you meet him!

Come say hi on November 11 from 2pm-5pm. You will NOT regret it!

My Body / Our Rights Signing

East Side Mags is totally stoked to announce that we have teamed up with Sabrina Jones - editor/contributor/artist - to bring an important and educational signing experience to Montclair!

My Body / Our Rights is an anthology unlike any other:

Radical cartoonists tell it like it is about abortion, contraception, healthcare, and identity.

The cartoonists of World War 3 Illustrated present comics on living in the body in a hostile society. From personal testimonies to collective chronicles, over 30 artists and writers deploy graphic evidence that bodily autonomy is essential to the individual and to communities. Abortion is revealed as lived by generations before and after being legalized. The mythic roots of misogyny, the rigid rules of gender, are exposed as outdated shams. Brave new lives are charted through the wilderness of broadening possibilities and furious backlash. Artists, activists, healthcare workers, and students unite in the belief that while my body is mine alone, our rights are always social, and must be named and claimed in the public sphere. Once again WW3 elevates truth-telling to the art of resistance.

Artists include: Roberta Gregory, Sabrina Jones, Sue Coe, Trina Robbins, Paula Hewitt Amram, Lee Marrs, Joyce Farmer, Rebecca Migdal, Seth Tobocman, Peter Kuper and many others.

Joining us for the signing will be the following contributors :

Copies will be available for purchase and can be signed by any or all of the contributors. We’ll also have a cool slideshow/presentation by the group that you do NOT want to miss.

Artist Spotlight: Ava Schrager

We here at East Side Mags have always wanted to see BIG NAMES come through our doors and we’ve had a BUNCH of those - some you’ve NEVER seen anywhere else except conventions. Names like Greg Hildebrandt, actor Patrick Wilson, Vita Ayala, Amy Reeder, Scott Koblish, Tee Franklin and many more to name. But our heart is always in the up-and-coming; the ones who we’re SURE will aspire to be those big names one day. We love the underground. The place where big names are still growing and thriving and learning to one day shatter records and draw the gaze of the wider public!

One such up-and-comer is coming here on October 14 from 2pm-6pm and we’re SUPER EXCITED to introduce you to her!

Meet commercial artist, 2D animator, colorist/illustrator, and multi-talented artist Ava Schrager! The Janimal RETURNS

A little over 9 years ago, we stumbled across a group of indie comics artists who would meet up and draw and hang out and just share stories with each other. We were a brand new store and didn’t really know any “industry” people. In walks the Janimal with his book Time Shark (about a time-traveling shark)! A kid-friendly comic artist who is quite possibly the nicest human to ever walk the earth. We immediately fell in love with both his work and him! Shortly after, life took over and Janimal moved to Arizona and we stayed in touch but we didn’t get a chance to host him again.

Now - almost a decade later - the Janimal returns to the halls of East Side Mags!

Jan Marc “The Janimal” Quisumbing is a Jersey tomato roasting in the Arizona sun. A graduate of the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (NJ), he now resides in Northern Arizona with his family and 3 cats. He has exhibited at comic conventions from Phoenix Fan Fusion to New York Comic Con and serves as the acting president of the Northern Arizona Cartoonist Association (NAZCA). His fun and cartoony style has a great retro feel and translates easily to the drawing demo classes that have been a staple at Verde Valley libraries and LibCons over the past nine years. He currently works at a library in Northern Arizona as its Program and Marketing Coordinator.

Tales from the Wolf - A Signing with Tony Wolf

“I thoroughly enjoyed Tony Wolf’s TALES FROM THE WOLF. I’m a huge fan of independent creators; artists who tell stories culled from real life & personal experience. Tony’s work absolutely stands alongside that of Robert Crumb, Linda Barry and Harvey Pekar.”

- Bill Sienkiewicz, Eisner Awards Hall of Fame & Emmy Award-nominated artist

Seriously? Bill Sienkiewicz? If Bill’s quote about Tony’s book doesn’t sell you that this is a graphic novel that you MUST have then I don’t know if anything will. Invoking the creative juices of some of comics most legendary creators like Crumb, Barry and Pekar while still maintaining an “every-person” sensibility and connection to all our lives - Tony is really dialed in on what makes us “human”.

Tony takes us through key points in his life that any of us could have lived or can relate to or can associate with and includes short stories about being an Alpha Flight fan or calling in to vote for the Death of Jason Todd Robin - even stuff like talking about his favorite pizza spot in Brooklyn, the Tartufo (a dessert) or the McRib! Plus a ton of awesome fan art, some political comics and more!

About the book:

New York Times comics creator Tony Wolf debuts his new paperback comics collection, TALES FROM THE WOLF!  Published by Cosmic Lion Productions, this 220-page book (for just $20!) contains true stories written & drawn from 23 years living in the same Greenpoint, Brooklyn apartment, as well as stories for the NYT about unique food history, a visual account of how Tony personally voted to kill the Jason Todd Robin, and more!

About Tony:

Tony's comics have also been featured in Vulture / New York Magazine, on NY1 News, Gothamist, Comics Beat, and UK site Broken Frontier!  Tony is also a lifelong actor, with co-star credits on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Blacklist & on Comedy Central.

Well there you have it - Tony Wolf is the true triple threat: actor, writer, artist.

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind signing!

Not to mention, he’s recently been endorsed by none other than Patton Oswalt:

Book Signing with Lisa Hodorovych

It’s not every day that we do a BOOK signing. Usually it’s graphic novels, comics or something with more pictures (y’know - for those of us that don’t do words good haha!) but Lisa Hodorovych is a local author and friend of East Side Mags and we support our friends so she’s coming by with her 2 books that are sure to put the shake in your boots!

First up, we’ve got THE DISAPPEARANCE:

Ashlynn Amuso is a thirty-year-old woman having the time of her life. She works for a great company in New York with her brother, Glen, and her two amazing friends, Kaden and Roman. Every year, they get a two-month vacation from work where they go wherever they want. One year they went to Mexico. Another year was Florida. Another was the Caribbean. And now, Ashlynn takes them to her family's cabin in Lake Minnetaha, Washington.

It is the perfect place. Peaceful and quiet. No one around to bother them, a large forest in the backyard to walk around, and a small town not too far away for shopping and drinking. They couldn't have asked for a better vacation spot.

But one day, Roman, Kaden, and Glen start leaving Ashlynn alone in the cabin with no word of where they're going or what they're doing. They continue to do so until they leave the cabin for good. Ashlynn is distraught. She doesn't understand why they left, but she wasn't about to leave them behind. She stays, searching for them, waiting for them to come back. Unfortunately, while waiting, something finds her.

With the help from her friend, Jack, she learns that she is not going insane. That whatever she saw was not a figment of her imagination. But what is it? Who is it?

Then there is the terrifying sequel called HE'S HERE!:

It's been a year since Ashlynn's ordeal. Now married to Jack and with a successful network television show, she still has questions that need answers. And with new, horrifying stories coming out of Lake Minnetaha, Washington, Ashlynn knows she has to go back. But her quest for those answers may just put her in the crosshairs of something that has been waiting for her return.

Don’t miss your chance to hang out with Lisa and get signed copies of her awesome books on August 12 from 2pm-5pm!

Rose Osler is a specialist. Her focus? Patients with Powers…at a hospital with a No Powered Patients policy. When a battle between Boston’s protectors and destroyers erupts, Rose is trapped between saving the city’s beloved hero by day and greatest villain at night. Except Rose could become a casualty when she’s forced to risk her recovery. As Rose pushes past her limits to save everyone else, will she be able to save herself?

Witness the downward spiral conceptualized by debut writer Matthew Klein with art by Morgan Beem (Swamp Thing: Twin Branches and The Family Trade), colors by Triona Farrell (Ms. Marvel and Shang-Chi), and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

So join us on July 22 from 2pm-5pm as we invite Matt to come in-store, deface your copy of Crashing with a sharpie (we’ll have BOTH available) and hear him talk about going from comic sales to comic writing and everything in between!

One Six (1/6) Signing

January 6th is a day that no one will soon forget.

That’s why Alan Jenkins, civil rights attorney turned Harvard Law professor, decided to write a story about what might have happened (What If… for your Marvel fans) if 1/6 had turned out differently - if the insurrectionists had accomplished what they set out to do.

It’s a dark future painted (well, drawn) by Will Rosado that starts off how many of us remember the event to go but takes a hard right turn (pun intended) into a militaristic, dystopian future.

About the book:

Written by Alan Jenkins and Gan Golan and illustrated by Will Rosado, 1/6 asks and answers the question: What if the January 6, 2021 Insurrection had been successful?

The graphic novel chillingly illustrates how close we came to authoritarian rule in America and the threats to our democracy that we still face. In the tradition of speculative fiction from George Orwell’s 1984 to Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale to the Twilight Zone, it explores themes of autocracy, scapegoating, strategic disinformation, and more, all told through a compelling, character-driven story.

Drawing on real-life events, 1/6 travels the road that led from back-room meetings, white supremacist rallies, and the Four Seasons Landscaping parking lot to a violent attack on the Capitol that left several Americans dead and shook our nation to its core.

It then imagines a world in which the events of that day turned out very differently.

1/6 is for lovers of graphic novels, lovers of speculative fiction, lovers of politics, and lovers of our democracy. It’s a story that demands our attention and calls on us to take action…while we still can.

Issue #1 will be available and Alan and Will will both be on hand to sign copies, discuss why this book is so important to understanding where we are, where we’ve been and costs and implications of where we are (could be) headed. It’s all of our hope (the creators and East Side Mags) that this comic will foster conversation and communication.

From a Washington Post article about the book:

Jenkins says creating an alternative American history is a way to engage people of varying political views. “One of our storytelling efforts is to have empathy for everyone,” he says. “That doesn’t mean everyone is right or that there’s moral equivalence, but we need to understand each other.”

We hope you’ll join us on July 1 from 2pm-5pm for a signing unlike any other East Side Mags has hosted to date.

Batboy Signing with M. R. Kessell

“Batboy is my alter ego...”

(Maybe Batboy is all of our alter egos in a way.)

From M. R. Kessell:

In the dark winter of February 2021 I sat down at my drawing board and proceeded to doodle. Without any planning, my hand laid down a circular object with eyes and a jagged body that looked like a winged jumpsuit. It dawned on me that my unconscious mind was drawing a bat boy. Hence the caption of that first random comic, which you'll find in this collection.

I posted that first doodle on my various social media accounts and people seemed to like Batboy. So I did another the next day. And then another. And so on, until we get here, only fifty comics later, but still it feels like we've gone through a lot.

Batboy is kind of like my alter ego; anxious, awkward and trying to make you laugh all at the same time.

I hope he makes you chuckle. Cause who couldn't use a laugh these days?

M. R. Kessell is a writer and illustrator with a penchant for the weird, the macabre, and the humorous.

Come meet M. R. Kessell and check out his awesome works. He’ll have things like stickers, pins, prints and more available along with his witty, weird and sometimes charming books! He’ll be here signing copies from 2pm-5pm.
